There are many types of orthodontic problems which may show as the following:
Myth: There is misconception among common people and many dentist that orthodontic treatment is beneficial only after 12 years of age, after the eruption of second permanent molars. Thus they consult orthodontist after 12 years of age only.
Fact: While some cases need to wait till 12 years of age before getting orthodontics started. There are a vast majority of cases who actually have an underlying jaw problem and need to get treatment started early for correction of their jaw problem. Later when the growth of jaws stops, much cannot be done about the jaw problem. Options become limited to extractions of certain teeth to correct the alignment. Whereas early intervention might lead to avoiding extractions.
Dr Anurag Gupta believes that the first orthodontic consultation of a child should be as early as 7-8 years of age.
Parents should note, that the American Dental Association recommends that by the age of seven, all children should have an orthodontic evaluation.
The Jaw problem
Many times there may be an underlying jaw discrepancy, wherein the growth of upper and/or lower jaw may be inadequate or excessive. These problems are not easily apparent and recognizable by common people. Only a trained orthodontist with help of proper reports will be able to detect and inform you about jaw problem.
When a jaw problem is present, it may be:
Class II: The upper jaw may be ahead, and/ or the lower jaw may be small or behind. Parents find that the upper front teeth are forwardly placed.
Class III: The upper jaw is small, and/or the lower jaw is ahead or big. Parents find that their child is having irregular upper teeth and lower teeth may be in front of the upper teeth (reverse bite).
If such is the case then the intervention should be directed towards correcting the jaw problem first. The tooth alignment takes a second priority in such cases.

The orthodontic examination:
During your visit there will be several diagnostic methods used to exam your bite, including an exam, pictures, x-rays, and impressions. Dr Anurag will examine your previous dental history, perform his or her own assessment, and obtain the required pictures they need to come up with an orthodontic treatment plan that will work best for you. Once the orthodontist has finished with their assessment, he or she will go over the plan with you. You will be able to discuss how long the plan will take, and what options you might have – such as choosing metal braces, clear ones, invisible braces or functional (jaw) appliance as in kids.
Length of Treatment
On average an orthodontic treatment takes about two years, after which you will need to wear a retainer for some time to help keep your teeth in place. Different aspects will affect the length of your treatment, including your initial condition, age, how much work you personally need done, and how well you follow your orthodontic treatment plan. The younger you are generally the quicker the treatment can progress if you follow the instructions precisely. However, some adults will find that their orthodontic treatments progress more quickly because they are able to follow the directions more consistently. Treatment with jaw appliance ranges from 6 months to 14 months depending on severity and indication. After the jaw appliance stage the patients are re-evaluated with X rays, photographs and impressions. It is then determined whether the patient need to undergo braces treatment for settling the teeth in their new position.
Types of Braces:
- Metal braces (Regular braces)
- Clear braces (Ceramic braces)
- Invisible Braces
